Our Methodology

We test each air purifier in a sealed 250 sq ft room with a particle counter, measuring PM2.5 reduction over 1 hour. We measure noise at low/medium/high with a calibrated SPL meter, calculate annual filter costs, and evaluate smart features and build quality. No manufacturer has editorial influence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CADR and why does it matter?
CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) measures how quickly a purifier removes smoke, dust, and pollen from the air. Higher CADR means faster cleaning. AHAM recommends CADR at least two-thirds of your room's square footage for effective filtration.
What's the difference between HEPA and True HEPA?
True HEPA filters meet the HEPA standard of capturing 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size. Some 'HEPA-type' or 'HEPA-like' filters use similar technology but may not meet the strict standard. True HEPA is preferred for allergy and asthma relief.
How loud are air purifiers?
Noise varies by model and fan speed. Most purifiers run at 24–35 dB on low (similar to a whisper) and 50–65 dB on high (like a conversation). Sleep mode typically keeps noise under 30 dB for bedroom use.
